The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment comprises units of competency required to deliver training in an industry specific or subject matter area, including competency-based assessment in a range of contexts.

This qualification comprises 14 units of competency - 12 core and two elective units. It is grouped into four themes. Candidates may undertake the 14 units of competency to gain the qualification or individual units from any theme to gain a Statement of Attainment. 

Learning Environment (ENV)

This group of three units addresses different aspects of the relationships between work and the environment of VET. The outcomes of these units establish the parameters of work in training and assessment

  • Work effectively in vocational education and training (TAAENV401B) - core
    This unit of competence covers the requirements to work effectively in the VET policy framework, including managing working relationships and a client-focused approach to work.
  • Foster and promote an inclusive learning culture (TAAENV402B) - core
    This unit of competence covers the requirements to foster and promote an environment which supports inclusive work practices and learning culture, including monitoring and improving work practices.
  • Ensure a healthy and safe learning environment (TAAENV403B) - core
    This unit specifies the competency required to ensure the health, safety and welfare of learners and candidates, including familiarisation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) responsibilities and assessing risks in the learning environment.

Learning Design (DES)

This group of two units addresses competence in the design of learning products and processes, addressing the skills and knowledge needed to use Training Packages and addresses different applications and outcomes of the learning design process.

  • Use Training Packages to meet client needs (TAADES401B) - core
    This unit specifies the competency required to use Training Packages and accredited courses as a tool to support industry, organisation or individual competency development needs, including analysis and interpretation of competency standards and accredited courses for client application.
  • Design and develop learning programs (TAADES402B) - core
    This unit specifies the competency required to conceptualise, design, develop and evaluate learning, using either endorsed competency standards or organisational performance standards or workplace procedures. It also includes reviewing the learning program.

Delivery and Facilitation (DEL)

This group of four units addresses the competence required to deliver training and facilitate learning, differentiating different delivery modes, methods and techniques.

  • Plan and organise group-based delivery (TAADEL401B) - core
    This unit specifies the competency required to plan and organise training for individuals within a group including interpreting the learning environment and delivery requirements, preparation of session plans and resources.
  • Facilitate group-based learning (TAADEL402B) - elective
    This unit of competence covers the requirements to facilitate learning by individuals within a group. It includes skills needed to support and manage interactions with and between individuals in a group.
  • Facilitate individual learning (TAADEL403B) - core
    This unit of competence covers the requirements to facilitate individual learning through a one-to-one relationship between a learner and facilitator. This includes identifying individual learning facilitation requirements and establishing the learning/facilitation relationship.
  • Facilitate work-based learning (TAADEL404B) - core
    This unit of competence specifies the outcomes required to establish an effective work environment for learning. This includes developing and implementing a work-based learning pathway.

Assessment (ASS)

This group of four units addresses the process of assessment, development of assessment tools, validation processes and leadership and coordination of assessment systems and services.

  • Plan and organise assessment (TAAASS401C) - core
    This unit specifies the competence required to determine the focus of assessment, prepare the assessment plan and review assessment in a competency-based assessment system.
  • Assess competence (TAAASS402C) - core
    This unit of competence covers the requirements to assess the competence of a candidate by establishing and maintaining the assessment environment and gathering evidence.
  • Develop assessment tools (TAAASS403B) - core
    This unit specifies the competence required to develop assessment tools by determining the focus of the assessment tool, assessing needs, designing and developing assessment tool needs and evaluating assessment tools.
  • Participate in assessment validation (TAAASS404B) - core
    This unit of competence covers the requirements to participate in an assessment validation process by preparing and contributing to that process

Imported Unit

This unit has been selected from the Business Services Training Package to complement the TAA04 competency standards.

  • Develop teams and individuals (BSBLED401A) - elective
    This unit of competence covers the requirements to determine individual and team development needs by identifying opportunities for improvement. This includes training needs analysis, performance management and dealing with change.
