PROFILE
Di Robertson Smith - Trainer for UNE Partnerships
Di has been training within the mining industry since 1989 in a variety of roles, including 11 years living in a mining community. She understands the challenges facing her students and has achieved great success in motivating and mentoring them.
How has the rapid growth of the mining sector impacted on training ?
The mining industry has changed significantly and now places greater emphasis on finding the ‘right’ person with the right skills for leadership positions, rather than the traditional tenure system. This has extended the focus from just technical skills to include soft skills, such as Frontline Management. Companies now understand the value training provides as a strong retention strategy and this has created great loyalty in many areas.
How does mentoring provide better outcomes for students as opposed to classroom teaching ?
Mentoring is an important learning tool in the mining sector, particularly for those working in remote areas because it allows a more individual approach to learning. The strengths and weaknesses of an individual can be identified and developed leading to greater understanding and absorption of new skills. For some remote locations mentoring provides the only real feedback to discuss new concepts or ideas. It also provides the opportunity to assess skill development through workplace competency ensuring greater understanding and impact.
What do you most enjoy about your job ?
It is extremely rewarding watching individuals grow through the one on one mentoring. Even when you see just a glimmer of change, you know you have made an impact and making a difference is really important to me.
