2008 Trainee of the Year

Trainee of the YearMartina Dorante was judged UNE Partnerships 2008 Trainee of the Year, successfully completing her Certificate IV in Business Administration.

Martina applied through the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) as an Indigenous Trainee in Queensland. After selection she was offered a position with the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) in Brisbane.

From the outset, Martina proved a keen and enthusiastic staff member with a genuine desire to learn as much as she could. According to her supervisor, Renay Whitney, Martina was a stand - out candidate becoming “integral to each team in which she worked in, complementing each team with her positive attitude and willingness to achieve team goals”.

Whilst she was extremely enthusiastic, Martina soon realised that there would need to be some distinct changes in her life to adapt to study. She sought advice from her family and friends in setting realistic targets, managing her time and finding the right environment to support her study. Martina developed a checklist which helped her achieve the right balance.

At work, Martina was aware that the existing rotation of trainees was not going to give her or the others the opportunities to complete their required tasks. Seizing the initiative she suggested that they complete the meeting requirements in their monthly meetings. “What appeared to be a challenge at first turned out to be an advantage to us all” commented Martina.

For Martina, her qualification has provided her with a much greater understanding of the overall operation of the organisation. According to Martina, “the training provided me with greater awareness of organisational procedures and how they are influenced by corporate objectives and the organisation’s business plan. Understanding the business plans and objectives means I can approach and conduct my work in a confident manner”.

Martina’s continuing contribution to her workplace is commendable and has impressed her senior managers who look forward to supporting her growth and development throughout her career within AQIS. According to Martina, “I’ve learnt a valuable lesson that it’s never too late. You can do whatever you put your mind too. Now I’m left with a feeling of satisfaction and drive to do it all over again”.
